I agree totally with you: The entire reason for remembering Christmas (a mass in remembrance of Jesus Christ) seems to of gotten lost along the way,doesn't it,by people who don't want to recognize the Holiness of Jesus Christ. Instead they have the (what is in it for me) attitude: I think it is terribly sad,that the true meaning has gotten so cluttered with festivity,and forgetting the true meaning for CHRISTmass: (spelling of the word was deliberate) on my part.
First, Christmas is a concept introduced in mid 300's AD by Emperor Constantine. December 25th was a festival to the Sun god because that was the date of the winter solstice. Constantine simply changed the name of a pagan festival and made it a ';Christian'; celebration. Second, consider that Jesus was born in approximately mid October not in December. I think it's fair to deduce that Christ was never a part of Christmas to begin with. So it really doesn't matter what people do on that at all. Look up the facts in the encyclopedia.
Actually, if you're celebrating Christmas on December 25, you're celebrating a pagan holiday. Scientists have pretty much proven that Jesus was born in April, so you're really helping to perpetuate a pagan holiday. On behalf of all pagans - thanks!
What I'd love to do is wean my family off commecial Christmas and get back to religious education. Just go to church on Christmas and have a family dinner - since Mary and Joseph would have been with their family. Give gifts to sick children or other charities on Jan 6 (Epiphany). I have gotten my wife to start taking down the Nativity Creches by December 27, to remember their flight to Egypt and the killing of the children. And I'm pushing to keep the decorations from going up before the first Sunday in Advent, and have them down by Epiphany.

I find this more absurd than the commercialization itself because these people have become so influenced by the retail aspect of Xmas that they have totally lost touch with the true origins of the day.
That said, I like the idea of giving on this holiday. It seems to bring the best out of - almost - all people; and it does represent - although very loosely - the gifts of the Maji.

It's up to individuals like you and me to keep the spiritual meaning of Christmas above the material. Gift are good, but be wise about your gift-giving. Don't give gifts you can't afford to people you don't care much about. Give some of your gifts to the poor. Give wisely to your family and friends, whether this entails expensive stuff or not. (Remember the gift Mary of Bethany gave to Jesus? Expensive gifts are sometimes appropriate.)
Society will not change its materialistic attitude toward Christmas unless individuals change, and influence their near and dear.
